What Is Hyrox?
A fitness race built to be the same everywhere: eight runs, eight stations, one fixed order.
Hyrox is an indoor fitness race that alternates a 1 km run with a functional workout station, eight times in a row, always in the same order. It isn't a CrossFit-style competition with surprise workouts announced the day of — the format is fixed and published in advance, at every Hyrox event worldwide, which is a big part of why it's grown quickly: you can train specifically for exactly what you're going to face.
It sits in the gap between endurance racing and strength training. A marathoner with no functional-strength background will struggle on the stations. A CrossFit athlete with no running base will struggle to hold pace across eight separate 1 km efforts. Hyrox rewards whoever trained the combination, not either extreme.
Who it's for
Divisions exist for a wide range of competitors: Open (the standard entry point for most first-timers), Pro (heavier loads, faster expectations), and Doubles or Relay formats for training and racing with a partner or team. You don't need to be an elite athlete to start — you need a base level of running fitness and some familiarity with the kind of strength-endurance movements used in the stations.
How long it takes
Finish times vary a lot. Competitive individual athletes in Open often finish somewhere in the 60–75 minute range; plenty of first-time or recreational competitors take closer to 75 minutes to two hours, and that's a completely normal outcome for a first race. Doubles and relay formats split the work differently and change the math again.
What to train if you're considering your first one
- A running base you can hold across multiple efforts, not just one fast time trial
- Basic technique on sled push/pull, farmers carry, and wall balls — technique matters more than raw strength on most of these
- Practice running immediately after a hard effort, since that's the part standard running or strength training alone doesn't prepare you for
