Hyrox Nutrition

Race day fueling for an event that runs like a hard tempo session, not a marathon.

Most Hyrox finishers are done in somewhere between 60 minutes and two hours — closer in duration to a hard tempo run or a half marathon than to a marathon. That changes the fueling picture: this isn't an event that demands constant mid-race carbohydrate the way ultra-distance racing does. What matters more is showing up properly fueled and hydrated, and fueling the training that gets you there.

Before the race

During the race

For most competitors finishing inside 90 minutes, mid-race fueling matters less than people expect — your pre-race meal is doing most of the work. If you're in a doubles or relay format with more standing/recovery time between efforts, or you expect to be out longer, a small amount of carbohydrate (a gel or a few sips of a sports drink) between stations is reasonable.

After the race

Standard post-hard-effort recovery applies: protein and carbohydrate within the next hour or two, and normal hydration. There's nothing Hyrox-specific that changes this — it's a hard, roughly hour-long effort, and recovery nutrition follows the same principles as any other hard training session.

Fueling the training block, not just race day

The bigger nutrition question for most competitors isn't race day — it's whether daily eating actually supports the training load of a Hyrox block, which mixes running volume with strength-endurance work. Under-fueling a demanding week shows up as flat sessions and slow recovery well before it shows up on race day.

Frequently asked

What should I eat before a Hyrox race?
A familiar, carbohydrate-based meal 2-3 hours before — similar to fueling for a hard tempo run or a half marathon. Early wave times may call for a smaller snack closer to race time.
Do I need to fuel during the race?
Most finish in 60-90 minutes, so mid-race fueling matters less than pre-race prep. Longer finish times or doubles/relay formats may benefit from a small amount of carbohydrate.
What about hydration?
Arrive hydrated rather than loading up right before the start. Indoor venues can run warm, so don't assume it matters less than an outdoor race.
