How Taper Actually Works
Taper isn't rest. It's a deliberate reduction, not a stop.
A lot of runners treat taper as "the easy part" — the reward after months of harder training. That framing causes problems, because taper isn't really about rest. It's about cutting volume while keeping some intensity, so your legs arrive at the start line fresh instead of flat, without losing the fitness you spent months building.
What a real taper looks like
Mileage drops noticeably in the final one to three weeks before race day — but it doesn't drop to nothing, and it doesn't drop all at once. A few short, sharp efforts stay in the schedule throughout taper, at real intensity, just at much lower volume. That combination matters: the reduced volume lets your body recover, while the retained intensity keeps your legs from going flat and unresponsive.
Why you don't lose fitness
The fitness from your training block is already banked by the time taper starts. Taper doesn't add to it in any meaningful way in that short window, and — despite how it might feel — it doesn't take it away either. What taper actually does is let your body absorb and recover from the training load you already put in, so you show up able to actually use the fitness you built instead of carrying accumulated fatigue into race day.
The hard part is mental, not physical
The genuinely difficult part of taper isn't physical — it's doing less on purpose, right at the moment when race-day nerves make you feel like you should be doing more. Extra mileage crammed into the final week doesn't add fitness; it just adds fatigue you haven't had time to recover from. Trust the training block you already completed. Taper is what lets it show up on race day.

Frequently asked
- What is a taper in marathon training?
- Cutting training volume in the final 1-3 weeks while keeping some intensity, so your legs arrive fresh instead of flat. It's a deliberate reduction, not rest.
- Will I lose fitness during taper?
- No. Fitness is already banked from the training block; taper lets your body recover enough to express it, without meaningfully adding or removing fitness in that short window.
- How much should I cut mileage during taper?
- Volume typically drops noticeably over the final 1-3 weeks while a few short, sharp efforts stay in. The exact amount varies by runner and training block.
